When an employee arrived at 6 a.m., most of the dogs were running around near the facility at 429 N.W. Scenic Drive in Grants Pass, just north of Interstate 5, said Margaret Varner, director of operations. It took over two hours to round them up. Some had strayed farther up the road. Four of the dogs had been sprayed by skunks, another had two injured legs and one had to go back to the veterinarian because stitches from neutering surgery were ripped open. That dog was adopted later Tuesday, Varner said. The alarm for the indoor portion of the facility did not go off because the dogs let loose were all in outside enclosures, Varner said. Varner was mystified why someone would turn dogs loose. "You never know if it's retaliation, or somebody thought these dogs were going to be put down," she said. "You never know what the mentality is." Varner said her security cameras need to be updated and that donations are being accepted to purchase newer technology. The Josephine County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case. Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call the Humane Society at 541-479-5154. The local Humane Society is a no-kill shelter.
