Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 13, 2003 Eagles soar past Del Norte CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — Coming off a dramatic last-minute win in Week 1, Eagle Point kept concerns to a minimum in Friday night’s 34-12 nonconference victory over Del Norte. The Eagles (2-0) used a touchdown run by Nate Idrogo with just under a minute to beat Summit, 23-16, last Friday, but similar heroics weren’t needed against Del Norte as Eagle Point rolled up a 21-0 halftime lead and cruised from there. "We played really well on defense," said EP coach Harry Hedrick. "We gave up one long touchdown pass (in the third quarter) and they got a meaningless touchdown in the end, but other than that we did a real good job containing them." Following a fumble recovery — one of three on the night for the Eagles — Idrogo put EP up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 6-yard run. The junior tailback finished with 108 yards on 16 carries. "We did a good job of getting the ball back and going down and scoring," said Hedrick. "Those things really turned around the game in the first half." Advertisement Steve Wyatt rumbled 56 yards for a touchdown on a fumble return in the second quarter, then Idrogo tacked on another TD off a 20-yard pass from Jared McClellan to close out the half. Creighton Nevin added a 1-yard score in the third and Robbie Johnston took his only carry 61 yards to paydirt in the fourth as the Eagles countered Del Norte’s two second-half touchdowns. Eagle Point finished with 312 yards rushing on 53 carries. "We controlled the game with the option a little bit and kinda caught some of their kids looking," said Hedrick. "Everybody seemed to be in sync and had it going on today in the running game." ASHLAND 9, GRESHAM 6 — At Gresham, Robert McNamara’s 37-yard field goal with four seconds remaining lifted undefeated Ashland to its second straight nonconference victory. The Grizzlies (2-0) drove 23 yards in three plays to set up the field goal. The winning drive came about after Gresham fumbled a punt and Ashland recovered on the Gophers’ 43-yard line. After a scoreless first half, Gresham (1-1) scored on Eric Brown’s 12-yard run with 6:31 left in the third quarter to take a 6-0 lead. A 63-yard fourth-quarter pass from Ashland backup quarterback Beau Lewis to Steve Jorgenson put the Grizzlies at the Gresham 1. Lewis scored on a quarterback sneak on the next play to tie the game at 6-all with 4:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Ashland passed for 209 of its 250 yards in total offense. Jorgenson caught five passes for 112 yards, while David Morris added five catches for 74 yards. Gresham had 224 yards in offense, with 131 coming on the ground. CROOK COUNTY 42, CRATER 12 — At Prineville, Shane Barden scored five touchdowns — four rushing — as Crook County (2-0) steamrolled past Crater in nonconference action. The senior tailback finished with 79 yards on 19 carries, while senior fullback John Furnish added 92 yards on 13 carries.
