Arlin Stafford Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Sep. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Arlin Stafford February 1, 1920 - September 21, 2015 Arlin Deell Stafford was born February 1, 1920, in Cisco, Georgia, to Joseph Berry Stafford and Ranie Lou Jones. Arlin was raised and attended school in Polk County in the Appalachian Mountain region of Tennessee. Arlin served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945 in Okinawa and Ie Shima, and was wounded in action in Saipan for which he was awarded a Purple Heart in 1944. Arlin married Katherine Parris in Chatsworth, Tenn. April 25, 1947. Arlin and Katherine lived in Tennessee and California until 1950 when they moved to southern California where Arlin worked on site development and expansion of the Los Angeles International Airport and several other industrial projects. In 1962 the family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where Arlin worked in construction on major road building projects and construction of the Lost Creek Dam. In 1982 Arlin built a home for his retirement outside of Rogue River where he lived, with Katherine’s care, until his death. Arlin is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Katherine; sister Ruth Spangler of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; daughters, Joyce Olson (Al); Kathie Philp (Bill); Barbara Weaver; Linda Kappen (Gery); and son, David Stafford (Aimee); 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard; sisters, Lennie, Lou Allie, and Beth Marie; and grandson, Thomas Agee. Arlin loved the outdoors and enjoyed exploring the East Fork and West Fork of the San Gabriel River in southern California; fishing in the Rogue and Applegate rivers and streams; and roaming the back roads of southern Oregon. In June 2013 Arlin received the Bronze Medal for meritorious service during World War II in a ceremony at Palmerton Park in Rogue River. The family would like to thank, with deepest gratitude, the office of United States Representative Greg Walden, for their for assistance. Arlin was a good man, an honest hard-working man, a brave American who sacrificed four years of his life in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a man to be admired. We all owe you, and those like you, a great deal. Rest well, old soldier, we love you. Interment services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2015 at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
