He was born December 15, 1957 in Fayetteville, N.C. After high school, Jay obtained his bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Metropolitan State University of Denver and his master degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. Early in his career, Jay’s passion was creating art. When he became a parent, his children became his works of art, his focus in living. He proudly called himself “Mr. Mom.” Additionally, he designed and completed a 2,000 sq. ft. addition to the family home by himself, making it truly a haven for family and friends. Beginning in his teenage years, Jay took pleasure in owning motorcycles, which he used to tour all 50 states. In the last few years of his life, his declining health limited his ability to ride. Jay was a dedicated salmon fisherman and could be found at day-break, at Casey State Park; he proudly tagged out numerous times. He was also a talented dog trainer, and his dog, Jenna, is a testament to his special way with animals. Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Karen McEwen; his daughters, Tess and Sydney McEwen; his sisters, Michelle DéFrance and Kathy Mayersky; and many friends of all kinds. A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 5, 2015 at Perl Funeral Chapel, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford, Ore. Jay would be pleased if memorial contributions were made in his name to the charity of your choice.
