PHS Play Opening: Phoenix High School's production of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will open at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Rose Street Theatre at Phoenix High School, 745 N. Rose St., Phoenix. The colorful production is fast-paced and set in the 1980s. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 14-15 and 21-22. Admission costs $10, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students.  Documentary Premiere: An advance public screening of "State of Jefferson, an Oregon Public Broadcasting "Oregon Experience" documentary, will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Meese Auditorium at Southern Oregon University, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. The documentary covers efforts to create an independent state in Northern California and Southern Oregon, including a 1941 effort between California and Oregon counties. Tutunov Piano Series: Pianist Francesco Nicolosi will perform music by Scarlatti, Mozart, Liszt and Sigismund Thalbert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Nicolosi is artistic director of the Sigismund Thalbert International Piano Competition based in Naples, Italy. He performs in famous concert halls around the globe. Spotlight on Irving Berlin opens: The opening production for Camelot Theatre's "Spotlight on Irving Berlin" will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at 101 Talent Ave., Talent. The event features narrators and vocalists Rose Passione and Erik Connolly as a four-piece orchestra accompanies them through a repertoire of 23 songs including "How Deep is the Ocean," "Cheek to Cheek" and "Puttin' on the Ritz." Makana: Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Makana will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Slack key is an indigenous Hawaiian art form that is the foundation for Makana's original music and reanimated classic songs. Students of hula school Ka Pi'o O Ke Ānuenue will dance at the show. It will entertain and educate about healthful and delicious sustainable choices, and local beekeepers will provide tastings and samples as well as sell products.
