James Jay Parker, 51, of the 900 block of Mt Pitt Street, Medford, was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after his son witnessed Parker killing the dog and reported the crime to police, according to court documents filed in the case. There was little indication the dog was in danger prior to the attack, according to Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau, who said a family member tried to stop the attack but was too late to save the dog. Budreau said a Ruger pistol was seized from the home as a matter of safety following the violent attack. "A family member found the pistol and handed it off to law enforcement," Budreau said. Parker allegedly stated to police that the dog had bad "ju ju" and was tied to his ex-wife. He allegedly beat the dog using a hammer and stabbed it in the chest. Parker was jailed Tuesday on felony charges of aggravated first-degree animal abuse, first-degree animal abuse and felon in possession of a firearm. He was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Jackson County Circuit Court. He remained in jail on $25,000 bail.
