That’s 57 more positions than were open in 2003, with 106 more candidates running than two years ago. Incumbents want to return in 70 percent of the races, the same percentage as in 2003. In 36 races, no one filed, a slight change from the 37 races with no candidates in 2003. In 2001, 22 races lacked candidates; in 1999 there were 31. Statewide, 486 races have one candidate; 191 races have two candidates; 39 races have three candidates; nine races have four candidates; and four races have five candidates.
