McElfresh, Phoenix bag golf titles Katie Mania's putter wouldn't let her rally for a third straight District 6 girls golf title during Tuesday's second round at Rogue Valley Country Club. The St. Mary's senior put herself in a bind with an opening-round score of 88 on Monday at the Running Y Ranch Resort and simply couldn't pull out of it Tuesday in scoring a 91. "She just wasn't putting well," said St. Mary's coach Bert Putney. "There's no answer for it. I don't know why it happened. She doesn't know why it happened. We've just got until Monday to clear everything up before state." Henley's Alesia McElfresh held on to her first-day lead to win medalist honors with a two-day total of 174, with Phoenix's Maria Gonzalez second at 178 and Mania third at 179. McElfresh will be the only golfer outside the top two qualifying teams to play in the girls state tournament set Monday and Tuesday at Eagle Crest Golf Course. "Alesia just kind of held on," said Putney. "She knew where she was in relation to Katie and she held on well." Phoenix won the team title with a combined score of 769 and St. Mary's earned the second state berth with a 777. Final Results MEDALIST - Alesia McElfresh, Henley, 80-94-174.
