Religion News: Vatican newspaper denounces Muhammad cartoons Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 7, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News WEEK IN RELIGION The Vatican’s official newspaper denounced Muhammad cartoons earlier this month, calling depictions of Islam’s prophet “blasphemy.” The Vatican’s remarks came just days after a policeman in Garland, Texas, shot and killed two would-be attackers at an exhibit depicting cartoonish depictions of Muhammad. The event was organized by Pamela Geller, a blogger known for her anti-Islam views, and it also included a number of conservative European politicians. SURVEY SAYS According to a recent poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, religious people are increasingly coming around on the gay marriage issue. In 2003 — the year that Massachusetts became the first state to allow gay marriage — less than 30 percent of religiously affiliated American supported gay marriage, while in 2014, that percentage climbed to 47 percent.
