Can you tell me what happened to the memorial and about the dog it was a tribute to? — Marinel B., Medford That was Oxer, a Belgian malinois. He became the city’s first police dog in the early 1990s, and was cross-trained to do both patrol work and narcotics detection, according to police Lt. Mike Moran. "He was the favorite of the department for a long time," said Moran. Oxer caught a lot of fleeing felons, said Moran, in addition to sniffing out criminal evidence left behind. He remembers Oxer finding a wanted law-breaker hiding in an alley when officers couldn’t find him. Oxer became ill and quickly died in 1999. Advertisement Currently the Medford police department has three trained police dogs: Tiko, Duke and Robb. He said city staff has been discussing what to do with the memorial plaque for Oxer, since the structures have changed outside City Hall and it can’t go back exactly where it was.
