The second time Wilson knocked down Derek Williams, not only was the fight’s fate secured, but a successful promotional venture for Wilson in bringing professional boxing to Southern Oregon was also clinched. "You know all I was really thinking was this doesn’t really mean nothing unless we close the show,” said Wilson. "We had to capitalize on the night. It was a great turnout, a great show and great fights on the card but it wouldn’t have meant nothing if I would have went out here with a loss. We were focused going into it and we knew what we had to do: Just close the show.” Wilson (11-0), a former two-time national champion and U.S. Olympic team alternate, not only was the featured attraction of the 190-pound main event but the promoter who envisioned and worked to secure the seven-card event at Compton Arena at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. After cruising out with his fight crew from the arena’s tunnel donning University of Oregon green and gold on his hooded robe, Wilson wasted little time establishing the center of the ring and putting the chase on Williams. Williams (4-1), of Higginsville, Mo., got caught by the right glove of Wilson late in the first round to send him to the canvas. Williams was able to get back to his feet and complete the rest of the opening round but all hopes at a comeback were short-lived. Wilson continued his barrage of picking apart Williams in the second round and, midway through the round, he landed a flush right hook that put Williams on the mat for good. “I was more worried about getting a little bit of work in and bringing him into the deeper water, like fifth or sixth round, and then stopping him,” said Wilson, “but you just have to take the opportunity when it presents itself.” At 165 pounds, Medford’s Rafa Valencia defeated Cole Milani of Klamath Falls by technical knockout. Valencia landed several shots including straight and hooking lefts that snapped Milani’s head back. Eventually, Valencia worked Milani into a corner, where he rattled off a series of punches until Milani’s knees buckled at the 1 minute, 46 second mark of the first round. Daniel “Boone” Wyatt of Eagle Point was knocked out 2:04 into the first round by Brandon Maddox of Detroit, Mich., in the pro debut of both fighters. Wyatt was getting Maddox to reach with jabs early in the fight, when Wyatt countered by landing a few solid shots. Wyatt’s mistake came when he ducked during Maddox’s punch combo directly into a right hook that dropped Wyatt to the mat. Wyatt was briefly unconscious and laid on the mat for a few moments while being tended to by trainers until he was able to get his feet back under him. Randy Rogers of Klamath Falls topped Justin Davis by unanimous decision at 195 pounds and at 128 pounds, Salem’s Josh Frias also won unanimously over Tualatin’s Sammy Perez in a frenetically paced match. At 145 pounds Rasheed Laval out of Nigeria, Calif., won by split decision over Gabriel Pinada of Hillsboro and Jesus Sandoval of Redwood City, Calif., gashed the face of Eugene’s Corbin Page in the second round, and he was not able to return to action.
