GIRLS BASKETBALL North drops close one to Sheldon Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 20, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News North Medford put itself in position to knock off ninth-ranked Sheldon in Southwest Conference girls basketball Friday. But the Irish found a way behind Autumn Baumgartner’s 28 points to defeat the Black Tornado, 56-53, at the North gym. “To me the difference was Baumgartner,” said North Medford coach Tim Karrick. “In the second half she took over the game.” Baumgartner, a 5-foot-8 senior guard headed to Georgetown on a basketball scholarship, scored 23 points in the second half. She was 7 of 8 from the foul line, including sinking a pair of free throws for the final points of the game. Sheldon (18-6, 11-2 SWC) went up 10 points with about five minutes left in the contest before the Black Tornado (16-7, 8-5) eventually cut the margin to 54-53. “Our girls battled back,” said Karrick. “We had the ball down one with a minute to go. We just didn’t execute like we needed down the stretch.” Sophomore guard Maggie Freeman paced North with 23 points and Savannah Bumgardner, a junior post, chipped in 16. Freeman, who was 3 of 5 behind the arc, also had four steals and two assists. “(Freeman) took care of the ball despite a lot of pressure on her,” said Karrick. “She got us into our stuff and made some big 3’s. She stepped up offensively, that’s for sure.” Megan Fossen led North with eight rebounds and Rylee Karrick had five assists and two steals to go with six points. Both teams had 23 attempts from the free-throw line, but the Irish made 16 to 10 for the Black Tornado. “We have to figure how to get over that hump,” lamented Karrick. “We’re still trying to find our way.” SHELDON (56): Barclay 12, Winkler 2, Miller 0, Hanson 2, Morosky 3, Baumgartner 28, Reinen 4, Green-Brooks 2, Neuman 3.
