Newmann shines in Royals� romp EAGLE POINT � Nick Newmann pitched a nine-inning complete game as North Jackson defeated Roseburg Pepsi 10-3 and moved to within one victory of reaching the American Legion A state tournament for the eighth time in nine years. The game was the opener of a best-of-3 Area 4 playoff. North Jackson (29-10), a three-time state champion, plays the second game of the series today at 7 p.m. at Roseburg�s Legion Field. Newmann (11-1) allowed six hits, struck out nine and surrendered two earned runs. North Jackson erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning. B.J. McFall opened with a walk, Scott Stockton singled and Ryan Garrett followed with an RBI single. Newmann reached on a fielder�s choice and Mark Farrell walked to load the bases. Jake Kleker walked to force in the tying run and Jesse Stevenson delivered a RBI single. Farrell scored on an error to complete the rally. The Royals increased the lead with six runs in the sixth inning. The big blow was Evan Pogue�s two-run homer. Garrett led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Stevenson and Stockton added two hits each. American Legion Baseball ASHLAND 23-1, GRANTS PASS 9-5 � At Grants Pass on Thursday, Ashland poured it on in the first game but couldn�t pull off the sweep as the Gold Miners snapped Ashland�s seven-game win streak. Blane Newfield and Bill Rowe each had monstrous games for Ashland in Game 1. Newfield helped cap a 10-run surge in the first inning with a grand slam, while Rowe smacked two three-run homers in the opener. Newfield finished Game 1 with five RBIs, while Rowe had six in the five-inning opener. Ashland spoiled its chances of a sweep in Game 2 when it committed all four of its errors in the fifth inning, allowing Grants Pass to score four unearned runs. Ashland capped its summer slate with a 13-10 overall and 13-9 league mark. W � Schmidt. L � Schroeder (3-3). Babe Ruth Baseball MEDFORD WINS TWO � At Roseburg, Medford�s 14-year-old team defeated Umpqua Valley, 10-4. David Soria pitched six innings and scored Medford�s first run in the top of the fourth. Chris Casey finished the game to keep Medford undefeated in the race for the South State title. In the fifth, Medford exploded for seven runs on six hits and five RBIs and capped the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Earlier, Medford downed the Roseburg Americans 19-2 behind pitchers Chris Casey and Allen Smith and a potent offense. Medford broke the game open with a 10-run third inning, sparked by RBI triples from Sam McHenry and Corey O�Neil. McHenry laced a two-run triple to score Trent Driskell and Ethan Barrus, and then scored on O�Neil�s three-bagger. MEDFORD 9, KLAMATH FALLS SOUTH SUBURBAN 8 � At Eugene, Mike Barry�s bases-loaded two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning kept Medford undefeated in the 13-year-old South State tournament at Sheldon High. Medford (2-0) plays the only other undefeated team in the tournament � Willamette Valley of Eugene (2-0) � at 1 p.m. today at the Sheldon Babe Ruth field. The winner will advance to Sunday�s championship game. Medford led 8-3 entering the seventh inning, but Klamath Falls scored five runs to knot the score. Barry delivered his winning hit on a full count. For Medford, Justin Meyers had two hits and three RBIs and Matt Schmelzer added two hits. Girls Basketball ALPINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT � At North Lake Tahoe, Calif., North Medford�s summer team finished second in the nine-team tournament. The Black Tornado advanced to the title game with a 43-35 win over Mountain View of Bend on Friday. Then, after only a 10-minute break between games and without two players who left for a family vacation, North fell in the title game to Gallup, N.M., 40-23. Gallup placed second in its state tournament last year. North Medford was without Kara and Kami Hwang, who had to leave the team for their family obligation. The tired Tornado fell behind 22-6 at halftime of the championship, then played Gallup evenly in the second half. North was led by Ashley Nelson�s 11 points and nine from Anna Lilly. Kelsey Versteeg, filling in for Kara Hwang, had five steals and five rebounds, and Renee Miller played strong defense. Kara Hwang led the way against Mountain View with 13 points and Nelson scored 10. Versteeg had seven rebounds and Tasha Williams six. On Thursday, the Tornado defeated Rimrock, Idaho, 26-20, and Fairfield, Calif., 34-26, before losing 47-33 to Gallup. Ashley Nelson had the biggest offensive output of the day with 16 points against Fairfield. The Tornado made 13-of-18 free throws against Fairfield. Boys Basketball OREGON ICE 81, SAN DIEGO FUTURE STARS 38 � At Las Vegas, South Medford High�s Eric Fiegi and Ryan Heil each had 11 points in leading the 16-year-old Oregon all-star team to its second victory at the Las Vegas Grand Finale tournament. Heil also added nine rebounds and three assists, while Sam Kelly of South Salem and Tyler Hayes of Bend each had 17 points. The Ice improved to 2-0 in pool play and are guaranteed a spot in the championship bracket. Oregon plays its third game of pool play today.
