Wolf gets most votes in Gold Hill election By JESSICA SMITH City Councilman Gus Wolf pulled in twice the votes received by his closest challenger in Gold Hill's special election Tuesday night. Unofficial results in the write-in contest showed that Wolf won 108 votes. Greg Fehl nabbed the second-highest vote count with 43 ballots favoring his election to the council. "I was wanting some competition and I guess I got it," said Wolf, who decided against placing his name on the ballot after learning he would run unopposed. Wolf said then that he wanted Gold Hill residents to think about who would best represent them on the council. In Tuesday's election, four other residents received votes for the council seat. Stacy Morretti won four votes, Christine Alford received two and Charles Humphrey and Dennis Ryan each garnered one vote. Wolf was appointed to fill a vacancy on the council in October 1999, but the city's charter required that a special election be held to fill the seat permanently. "A lot of time goes into this job and it's good to see that people want me back," said Wolf, a former mayor who owns a downtown fruit stand. In other news, council member Lisa Alexander submitted a letter of resignation Friday, saying she will not be eligible for the seat since she is moving away from Gold Hill. Alexander was elected to the post in November 1998. In just over a year on the council, she survived a recall effort stemming from her support for former police chief David Crawford, who was convicted in 1999 for assaulting a dirt biker. City Recorder Tony Paxton said Alexander's resignation will be discussed at the council's next meeting, set for April 3. Although not required by law, the city generally advertises for council applicants to fill vacant seats. "The past practice has always been to open it up and seek residents interested in serving," Paxton said.
