COLLEGE GOLF Northwestern freshman Wu claims tournament MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 8:21 pm Posted Nov. 6, 2014 @ 8:21 pm » Social News Former St. Mary’s golfer Dylan Wu wasted little time in making a splash on the Northwestern golf team. The freshman, in only his fourth collegiate tournament, won the Gifford Collegiate championship Wednesday and was selected Big Ten golfer of the week. Wu carded 16 birdies and an eagle over three rounds at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif., to post a 9-under 204 and win the Gifford over a field packed with talent. Seven of the 10 teams at the tournament are ranked in the current top 40 of the Golfstat.com rankings and 10 of the top 62 individuals in the country were among the field. Wu’s 204 is tied for the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in Northwestern program history. He made a back-nine charge in the final round with five birdies to erase a four-stroke deficit and win the tournament by a single shot, sinking a 4-foot birdie putt on the final green for the victory. Wu finished Northwestern’s four-event fall schedule with a team-best 71.27 stroke average and four finishes inside the top 30, including two top 10s. Six of his 11 rounds have been at par or better.
