OLCC orders TouVelle tavern owner to sell or close business owner of a Central Point bar either must sell his business or close up shop, state liquor authorities have decided. Douglas McCallum, owner of TouVelle Food & Brew at 9367 Table Rock Road, has until Jan. 1 to meet the demands of a settlement agreement with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. Commission representatives said McCallum violated several state liquor laws during a five-month investigation of his business. "According to my attorney, I should turn over the property to some other people. I'm now at social security age and this is probably my best decision," McCallum said from his bar during a telephone interview. "That's about all I have to say on that," he added, saying he would not comment on whether a settlement with the OLCC signifies an admission of his guilt. In addition to selling his property, McCallum's license to sell liquor will be revoked under the settlement agreement. "He didn't operate the way he was supposed to," said Brian Schmitz, OLCC regional manager in Southern Oregon. "We believe (he) should no longer be a licensee and our goal is to remove him from the industry." During an investigation that ended in April, McCallum and his employees allegedly served a drunk customer, lied to OLCC investigators and failed to eject rowdies, the OLCC said. McCallum also failed to meet OLCC requirements to sell hard liquor in his bar, the commission said. Under a 1998 rule, OLCC requires businesses to offer a minimum of five distinct food items on its menu and offer dining seating for 30 people to qualify for a hard liquor license. The OLCC alleged that McCallum operated without a cook and didn't have the required food or equipment to serve food during its investigation. Under the agreement, McCallum waives his right to request a hearing in the case and agrees to surrender his liquor license. The new owner has until Jan. 1 to submit a license application to the OLCC.
