The Coquille Indian Tribe announced this week it is donating $44,000 to Jackson County organizations that benefit families and homeless people. The grants will be awarded Friday along with 43 other grants for programs in Coos, Curry, Douglas and Lane counties. The Coquille Tribal Community Fund grants in all counties total $266,000, tribal officials said. The Jackson County grants are: $10,000 to La Clinica del Valle for its mobile clinic-on-wheels. The mobile clinic focuses on public housing residents, Phoenix High School students, migrant agricultural families and homeless people. $10,000 to Rogue Retreat to help expand Hope Village, Southern Oregon’s first “tiny house” transitional community for the homeless. $7,000 to Roots & Wings Community Preschool to provide tuition aid on a sliding scale for families that don’t quite qualify for other programs. $5,000 to help ACCESS expand its Free Mobile Food Market for families in need. $5,000 to the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Southern Oregon to support financial education and counseling programs. $5,000 to help Youth 71Five establish a youth center in an unused fire station. $2,000 to the Peter Britt Gardens Music & Arts Festival Association to support this coming summer’s free music series, BrittKids Koncerts. The Coquille Tribe operates The Mill Casino in North Bend, just north of Coos Bay. The tribe has purchased a quarter-mile of South Pacific Highway frontage in south Medford in hopes the federal government will allow the tribe to build a casino.
