A Level 1 evacuation order for the area around Diamond Lake has been lifted, according a Saturday-morning update from fire officials working to quell the Crescent fire and National fire, the two blazes that comprise the 8,880-acre National Creek Complex burning in and near Crater Lake National Park. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, with recommendations from the fire management team, decided that the risk to structures and people at Diamond Lake from the Crescent fire has been reduced enough to permit the lifting of the evacuation order, according to a statement issued by fire managers. The North Entrance Road to Crater Lake National Park between State Highway 138 and the Crater Lake west rim drive at North Junction remains closed, as does Highway 230. Crater Lake National Park is open, but a segment of the Pacific Crest Trial is closed from the park north boundary to the junction with the Lightning Springs Trail. Access to the park is from the south entrance off State Highway 62. The park's rim drive is open, and smoke in the caldera has been minimal, park officials said. The National Creek Complex is estimated at 10-percent containment. Warm, dry weather is expected in the fire area today, with gusty winds on the ridges this afternoon, which fire managers expect will lead to an increase of fire behavior. The potential for fire spotting remains high, fire officials said, especially in the lodgepole pine areas, and firefighters and equipment remain poised to respond.  A structure-protection group remains in place to protect structures near Diamond Lake and will begin to remove excess equipment such as sprinklers and hoses that are no longer needed. Helicopters may be used to today for water drops to slow the spread of the fire, to help firefighters suppress spot fires jumping across containment lines, and to ignite a burn-out designed to remove more fire fuels along existing containment lines.
