Fans certainly got their money’s worth at Glendale High Tuesday night as the host Pirates rallied for a 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-11 victory. Junior middle KaLeigh Causey produced 24 kills and eight blocks and senior middle blocker/outside hitter Danielle Kent slammed 20 kills to pace the Pirates, who emerged as the SCL’s lone unbeaten team at 4-0. St. Mary’s slipped to 3-1 in league play and 5-5 overall. "Determination and focus — that’s what won it for us," said Glendale coach Diana Miller, whose Pirates improved to 6-2 overall. "They had us on the ropes and we had to play through some adversity, but our girls wouldn’t be denied." Advertisement St. Mary’s coach James Joy was impressed with Kent, who stands only 5-foot-7 but "jumps as high and hits the ball as hard as any kid at the 2A level." Senior setter Sarah Jephson bumped 27 assists and junior defensive specialists Chrystal Charro and Erica Jones came up big in the back line for Glendale. "When they had us down two games to one we made some adjustments with our blocking," Miller said. "We decided to key on some of their people and that made a difference." Crissy Seus had 15 kills and 11 digs and fellow outside hitter Kathryn Zielony added 16 digs and five aces for St. Mary’s. Sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Reedy chipped in 15 digs for the Crusaders. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 25-25-25, RIDDLE 9-9-12 — At Riddle, Cascade Christian served at 93 percent as a team during an SCL victory. Kyleen Johnson led the Challengers (4-3, 3-1 SCL) with 12 kills and four assists, while Natalie Dicus added 10 kills and four digs. Audrey Holmes had eight aces for the match and served 14 straight points in the opening game for Cascade. Skyline Conference PHOENIX 25-25-25, ROGUE RIVER 15-14-24 — At Phoenix, Rogue River had difficulty getting into transition throughout the match because of effective serving by Phoenix. The Pirates (8-2, 4-1 Skyline) served at 98 percent, putting in 74-of-75 attempts. Junior defensive specialist Nicole Engle and senior setter Brittney Mayhew paced Phoenix at the service line by combining for 32-of-32, which accounted for 23 points. The Pirates received seven kills each from junior outsides Jessica Howard and Ashley McCarty. HENLEY 25-25-25, HIDDEN VALLEY 15-19-12 — At Klamath Falls, sophomore middle Jenna Matchett and senior outside hitter Rachel Jertberg had seven kills each to power Henley to the Skyline Conference victory. With the win, the Hornets moved to 4-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall. MAZAMA 25-27-25, ILLINOIS VALLEY 21-25-13 — At Klamath Falls, defensive specialist Korina Petersen registered 18 digs and middle blockers Ashley Dinwiddie and Stephanie Snider combined for seven kills, five blocks and four aces to lead Mazama to the Skyline Conference victory. LAKEVIEW 25-25-25, NORTH VALLEY 15-19-17 — At Merlin, senior middle Caitlin Albertson went 24-for-24 at the service line, smashed three aces and posted eight kills to lead Lakeview to the Skyline Conference victory. Senior outside hitter Jenna Kiley added nine kills for the Honkers, who moved to 5-0 in the Skyline and 11-4 overall. Lakeview trailed 17-14 in the second game, but Albertson keyed a Honker comeback by serving 10 straight points. Elaina Renius, North Valley’s 6-foot-3 senior middle, produced 12 kills, four digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Whittney Makepeace drilled three straight aces for the Knights (4-2, 3-2 Skyline) in the second game, but Lakeview withstood the onslaught. Skyline A League HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 25-25-25, PROSPECT 20-23-7 — At Prospect, Hosanna’s net play proved too much as Prospect dropped to 2-2 in Skyline A Southern Division action. The Cougars’ lack of communication led to poor passing and a loss of focus.
