Nelson, 32, had an eye on Southern Oregon long ago, but took a circuitous route. He developed a business plan back in dental school, even pinpointing this town of 17,000 that straddles Interstate 5. Instead, Nelson took a position in the Midwest after wrapping up his studies at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in Southern California. After a couple of years at community health center in Macomb, Ill., the Midwest had lost its appeal for Nelson, who had family in Grants Pass, so he took a position at Siskiyou Community Health Center in Grants Pass. But he never lost sight of his plan and began searching for a practice that might be available in Jackson County. "I started contacting dentists who were older than 55, asking about their future intentions," Nelson said. "When I got a hold of Dr. Sanford, he said he wasn't going to retire for another three or four years. A month later, he called and said he had changed his mind." That was in early 2014. "It's within a block of the spot I picked when I put my business plan together," Nelson said. In the interim, Nelson was part of a 23-dentist team performing dental work for 817 patients during a five-day humanitarian mission to Guatemala. He'll be opening shop July 1, continuing with Sanford's office staff, and eventually hopes to take on a partner in the practice. The office is at 1333 Plaza Blvd., Suite A, next to Albertsons.
