The beauty of the bear "Arctic Dream" Thursday Jan 12, 2017 at 9:00 AM Painter Eva Thiemann's fascination with Alaskan Brown Bears was piqued when she moved from Latvia to Alaska in 1997. She observed and photographed these bears while on her many camping trips to Denali and Katmai National Parks. At Denali, she watched bears in their natural habitat on the tundra, and at Katmai she watched them fish for salmon in streams and rivers. Thiemann's uses oil paints to interpret her visions of Alaskan Brown Bears in their wilderness environments, which will be displayed through January at Belle Fiore Winery, 100 Belle Fiore Lane (off Dead Indian Memorial Road), Ashland. Hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Thiemann holds an art degree from the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga and a biology degree from the University of Latvia, also in Riga. Thiemann moved to the Applegate Valley after six years in Alaska, but still travels back to her favorite places for inspiration. Her videography documenting Alaska's Brown Bears has been included in three National Geographic television specials: "King Bear," "Urban Jungle" and "Animal Fight Night."
