Griffiths, one of the backers of the Seattle-San Francisco auto service during the fair service, will arrive in Medford this week to arrange the final details of the establishment of the service May 1st, when the first rush of the tourist travel to the Pacific coast is expected to begin. Mr. Griffiths is now in San Francisco arranging the details at that terminal. The auto company is issuing circulars descriptive of the western Washington and Oregon territory, and one of the features in this advertising is the side trip to Crater Lake from this city. The Jackson County fair grounds have been leased, and a tent city will be erected for the overflow from the hotels. Medford will also be a gasoline station. According to reports, all the reservations for the first trip have been taken. Agents of the company will contract for the use of autos between this city and Roseburg running on a regular schedule.   Today is the last day under which taxes can be paid under the half payment clause, and the county treasurer's office was kept busy Tuesday and today receiving eleventh-hour payments. Tuesday was the heaviest receipt day of the tax paying season, over $47,000 being turned in. Of this amount, $35,000 was from the Southern Pacific. County Treasurer Colvig said this afternoon that the receipts today would total in the neighborhood of $12,000 all from individuals.   The Presbyterian church auditorium was filled Tuesday evening to hear Will Steel's lecture on Crater Lake National Park, illustrated by colored views. It was a very interesting lecture, and the pictures were fine. Mr. Steel told, in a very forceful way, about the difficulties in getting appropriations adequate to the needs of the park, but explained that everything now points to hard surfaced roads from Medford to and through the park in the next few years. While the house was comfortably filled, many were kept away by counter attractions and inclement weather, so that some who didn't attend are asking for a return engagement and the Knights of Pythias, under whose auspices the lecture was given, may conclude to repeat it.
