LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Nov. 14 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 14, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Still supporting the ideals Alas, the Democratic candidates who rejected the support of our president in the last election have convinced me to abandon the Democratic Party and become an independent voter. As John L. Louis once said, "A curse on both of their houses." I will continue to support our president and the health care law. I will continue to support a woman's right to choose and human rights for everyone. I will continue to oppose the Citizens United decision of the Supreme Court and the Republican agenda to privatize Social Security and repeal the affordable health care law. I will reject the actions of the worst Congress that money has bought. Walter Schmidt, Jacksonville People are tired of country's direction The Mail Tribune published an article Nov. 7 saying white voters of all ages were less likely to back Democrats this year. The article said Democrats could win with 90 percent of the black vote and 40 percent of the white vote. The article said they could currently expect 30 percent of the white vote. Could it be white voters are getting tired of hearing they are racists if they do not agree with the agenda of the Democrats? Could it be many folks, including Hispanics, are fed up with people, including narcotics peddlers and gang-bangers, illegally entering our country by simply walking across our border? Could it be conservative blacks are tired of hearing they are "Uncle Toms" if they don't agree with a black leader's complaints about our country's alleged racist treatment of minorities? I keep reading that the Republican Party better change its ways or it will become inconsequential. Maybe. Maybe not. The next two years will be interesting. Then perhaps we can elect a president who respects the Constitution. Maybe the votes of many of our minorities will be to support our country's laws rather than vote "progressive" as the Democrats seem to take for granted. Jim Chambers, Medford Common Core experiments on students Parents are becoming aware of the curriculum in our schools when a child brings homework. I am aware from experience and research, this can be a very frustrating experience for the child and parents. The Common Core math often brings tears to the child and frustration to the parents and math experts. Common Core is untested. Your children are being used to test these materials. Students will be tested on Smarter Balanced tests. Research shows the tests have no direct value to the students. I urge all parents do some research on the Internet. The Internet is loaded with information about Common Core and Smarter Balanced testing. Data mining of your children is removing privacy of the children and their parents. States and school districts are trying to get out of these programs when they become aware and have the courage to do what they believe is best for their children. My hope is that our local parents will do the same. I am connected to Parent Led Education here in the Grants Pass area. I welcome parents to email me with questions and offers of support. Neil Clark, Grants Pass A simple solution to GMO labeling No one should be surprised if the GMO issue comes around again in a year or so. Considering the narrow margin by which it was defeated this time, there's a good chance it will pass next time. If so, I have a suggestion for the food production companies, which will save them a lot of money and save those of us who have to buy food a lot as well. Rather than producing two sets of labels, just put the same label on all products, stating "this product may contain genetically modified organisms." There, everyone's happy.
