Cantaloupe from a wrecked semi-truck — 40,000 pounds of melon — is being given away at Star 24 Hour Towing in Medford. If you want some, drop on by. The location is 1024 Summit Ave. "We gave away 38 crates last night," Melissa Shreeve, business development manager for Star 24 Hour Towing, said Thursday. On Sunday, the tow company recovered a semi-truck that was in an accident on Interstate 5 near Ashland. The truck was hauling a trailer filled with 20 tons of cantaloupe. Shreeve said when a semi-truck carrying food is involved in a crash, for various reasons the company receiving the shipment will sometimes not accept it. That was the case this time, so instead of just tossing it, Shreeve and her team are giving the fruit away. "We've been keeping it cool," she said. The cantaloupe is being stored in the refrigerated trailer and is being given away by the crateful in Star's tow yard. Everyone is welcome until it's gone. Before it was open to the public, the first thing Shreeve did was call up local nonprofits for first grabs. Already St. Vincent de Paul Society, Kids Unlimited and ACCESS have gotten their crates. This is the second fruit truck in three months that Star has recovered. Last time it was 40,000 pounds of pineapple. For both incidents, the company hopped on Facebook to inform the public of their major fruit giveaway, using the hashtag #StarPickMeUp.
