The separate blazes destroyed a mobile home at Eagle Trailer Court and a condemned house at the corner of Alta Vista and Riley roads, Jackson County Fire District No. 3 Deputy Fire Marshal Don Hickman said. Three fire engines and 11 firefighters went to the first fire in the Eagle Trailer Court at 233 S. Shasta Ave. about 2 a.m., Hickman said. The homeowner was sleeping when the fire broke out, but he and his cat escaped safely. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fast-moving blaze, but the trailer was destroyed, Hickman said. Investigators determined that a candle left burning had caused the fire. Investigators also noted that the home’s smoke detector didn’t work. The second fire broke out about 7 a.m. in an empty home in southeast Eagle Point. When crews arrived, they found an empty single-family home engulfed by flames, Hickman said. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to a detached garage, Hickman said. The property owner told fire officials that the house was boarded up, posted as condemned and set for demolition. The building had no electricity, and no cause of the fire was readily apparent, Hickman said. Oregon State Police will investigate the fire’s cause, he said.
