Our pantry serves 300 to 600 hungry people per month: food insufficiency is very prevalent in Phoenix. Urban Renewal's Housing Survey found a large group of elderly widows who live on $375 per month: They raised the kids, led the Scouts and Sunday School, held the bake sales, and now subsist on their husbands' meager Social Security. Our pantry provides where SNAP and WIC leave off: toiletries, cleaning and laundry products, toilet paper! Thanks to ACCESS we bring in goods from Oregon Food Bank and local grocery stores, providing a hand up, a cup of coffee and community. Volunteers are always needed, so thank you, USPS carriers, for pitching in! The Phoenix Food Project needs you to be a good neighbor, too. It's so simple! Karen Jones Phoenix Trump declares war Trump has declared war on women, minorities, immigrants, Latinos and Muslims, now declared war against life on Earth. Trump vows to dismantle the historic Paris Agreement, wherein 177 nations have agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to protect the world from warming that would devastate natural systems plus our agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Exhibiting typical head-in-the sand ignorance, Trump also vows to support no-holds-barred expansion of fossil fuel extraction, consumption, and export. The science is clear: to prevent global warming beyond 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial revolution conditions we must keep most known fossil fuels reserves in the ground. The Republican Party Presidential nominee, who falls for every berserk hoax that crosses his desk and tweets his endorsement across the planet, refuses to accept clear and internationally accepted scientific conclusions. Threatening all life, Trump elevates the phrase "frightening ignoramus" to new heights. Would you vote for Jim Jones or Hitler? Bruce Bauer Medford Bomb unnecessary Leonard Pitts' column in the May 16 Mail Tribune considers whether we should apologize for dropping "the bomb" on Japanese cities. I saved some comments published in the Mail Tribune years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't save the date. These comments belie the need for the bomb as a weapon in ending the war, making its use seem more like retaliation and a "trial run" to test our atomic power. I'm sure anyone could find the comments in Mail Tribune archives from about 10 years ago, from Eisenhower, McArthur, Grew and Bard. Admiral Leahy, the president's chief of staff, described the action as not worthy of Christian man "... as of no material assistance in our war against Japan." Barbara Vlahos Medford Charter ad pathetic I want to second the opinion of Sharon Deemar, printed May 24, regarding the commercials shown constantly for Charter. The "rapper" is pathetic, even to we old folks who appreciate none of it, and even the wife in the commercial looks like she wants to run screaming from the house! That commercial seems to air at least hourly and is one of the longest ever made! Charter has consistently made irritating ads, but I feel they have exceeded their mark on this one. I hope they abandon this approach soon.
