UP NEXT: Class 6A state playoffs, March 2. » Social News With momentum in the balance, North Medford senior Brian Schireman elevated for a corner 3-pointer in front of the student section at North Medford High Tuesday night. "As soon as I caught the ball over there I heard someone say, 'That's going in,'" the guard said. "And I believed it." His swish against Southwest Conference rival Roseburg was one of the daggers during a critical run for the ninth-ranked Black Tornado, which went on to win, 57-42, in the regular-season finale. Schireman had 15 points and Kaison Faust added 11 points and six rebounds for North (19-5, 10-4 SWC), which prevailed despite ice-cold shooting from beyond the 3-point arc (4 of 23). The Black Tornado, which trailed 15-11 after the first quarter and led 24-23 at halftime, will next host a first-round Class 6A state playoff contest next Wednesday against an opponent to be determined. North sits in third place in the SWC, but could move into a tie for second if Thurston were to beat Sheldon today. At press time, the Tornado was eighth in the OSAA's power rankings. The game on Tuesday was tight before North created some separation by deploying an intense full-court press and finally stringing together several successful possessions. Faust tied the game at 29 on a layup in the third quarter and then Schireman drove hard to the rack and made his bucket. North would never trail again. Brad Allen connected on a difficult basket while falling backward to give the Tornado a five-point lead, and then Schireman canned the back-breaking triple. His fastbreak lay-in moments later capped a 12-0 surge by the home team. Considering North began the third quarter by missing its first six shots, that offensive eruption was just what the doctor ordered. The Tornado finished 22 of 56 from the floor. "I thought Roseburg did a lot of good things," North head coach Scott Plankenhorn said. "They packed it in and we couldn't shoot from the perimeter. There weren't a lot of bad shots and they were open. They just weren't going in. I thought after the first quarter our defense got a little stingy and that helped us maintain." Matt Lasota recorded nine points, Tucker Barry seven points and four rebounds and Tyren Wolfe four points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals for North, which outrebounded Roseburg, 33-23. "(That run) gave us a cushion and made us a little more comfortable," Barry said. "We knew we needed to speed the game up." Hayden Luttrell led the Indians (9-15, 4-10) with 19 points. "I thought our kids controlled the tempo, but North is explosive," Roseburg head coach Mike Pardon said. "They got runs and we turned the ball over. It's what (North) does well." North's six seniors were honored before the contest. "It was just kind of a weird thing at the start just to look around and realize this is our last home league game with each other and we've been playing since sixth grade and stuck together as best friends," Schireman said. Faust, a sophomore, said he was glad to play a role in the emotional evening for his older teammates. "It was nice to get the seniors a victory," he said. "It is a special night for them."
