In a unanimous vote, the council awarded a contract to SmithCFI of Portland, and the commercial-grade furniture will be purchased with a cooperative agreement with Oregon State University. By piggybacking on OSU's purchasing power, the city estimates it will save $22,500 on the furniture purchase. Councilor Eli Matthews said he wanted to know whether any of the existing furniture would be moved to the new police headquarters, under construction at the corner of 10th and Ivy streets. Greg McKown, the city’s project manager, said existing computers and phone systems will be moved over. “Everything else will be replaced,” he said. The furniture costs are part of the overall $23 million the city has budgeted for the police headquarters, which is about halfway through construction. City officials hope to bring the final cost down closer to the original $22 million budgeted for the project, which faced cost overruns last year. The city had set aside $431,497 for the furniture, but another $90,000 is coming from asset forfeiture dollars. McKown said the new furniture is being designed to fit the building, which will be configured differently than the current station and is expected to last 50 years. Some individual offices will be replaced by a "bullpen" arrangement in which desks are clustered to allow better communication among investigators. "Unfortunately, the existing furniture could not be reused to accommodate the program in the new facility," McKown said. At 46,500 square feet, the new police headquarters will replace the existing facility in the bottom floor of City Hall. Adroit Construction Co. of Ashland expects to finish it by September, but the building won’t be occupied until October, after equipment and furniture are moved in. The three-story police headquarters will have a 90,000-square-foot parking garage that will allow easier and more secure processing of suspects brought in for questioning.
