SOU ends trip to national tournament with win over Grace WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Southern Oregon University volleyball team capped its first-ever trip to the NAIA Championships Friday by sweeping Grace (Ind.) College. The Raiders (23-10) evened their Pool D record at 2-2 with a 30-16, 30-21, 30-28 triumph over No. 13-seed Grace (26-13). Despite the victory, previous setbacks in pool play to fifth-ranked Fresno Pacific (4-0) and fourth-ranked College of Saint Mary (3-1) prevented SOU from qualifying for the quarterfinal round. SOU finished third among five teams in the pool, one win shy of advancing. The Raiders were Region I champions and were seeded 12th here. "This was one of our best matches of the year, and I was proud of the way we finished," said Raider coach Paul Elliott. "It was a great way for our seniors to go out." Sophomore all-star outside hitter Kristina Matchett again paced Southern Oregon with a match highs of 19 kills and 15 digs. Matchett, the Cascade Conference MVP, led the team in kills in 31 of 33 matches this year and finished the year with a school-record 669. The Raiders also received solid performances from seniors Sabrina Garboden (21 assists, 10 digs), Shelley Gorin (10 digs) and Michele Dardis (seven kills). Junior Kacee Jacobsen and sophomore Sara Tatom compiled five blocks each. "We were very efficient against a team that matched up very well with us," said Elliott. "Our ball control and blocking made the difference." After the Raiders breezed to wins in Games 1 and 2, the Lancers grabbed leads of 18-11 and 24-16 in the third game before the Raiders responded with a game-winning, 14-4 run in which Matchett had four kills. "We played solid volleyball all week, and I think the two teams we lost to are good enough to beat some Pac-10 schools," said Elliott. Women's Basketball HOLY NAMES 85, SOUTHERN OREGON 71 - At Oakland, Calif., Angella Zanini scored 27 points as 10th-ranked Holy Names College withstood a furious comeback by Southern Oregon at the Holy Names Shootout. The Raiders turned the ball over 17 times and shot just 38 percent from the foul line during the first half that ended with the Lady Hawks leading, 50-29. SOU climbed all the way back to within six points with eight minutes remaining, but Holy Names held on. Zanini also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Mya Paul scored 18 points and dished out five assists. Sarah Marks led the Raiders with 18 points - including 3-of-3 from 3-point range - and Lindsey Hilaire added 15. Southern Oregon plays Pacific Union, a 90-16 loser to Sonoma State, today. Men's Basketball MENLO COLLEGE 77, SOUTHERN OREGON 74 - At Atherton, Calif., T.J. Caughell came off the bench to score 26 points on 11-for-12 shooting for the Raiders at the Menlo Tournament. A starter in the first three games, Caughell has taken to his reserve role with another strong game in reserve that included 3-for-4 foul shooting. Hamilton Barnes had a chance to tie the game for SOU (3-3) in the waning seconds but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Football Three Southern Oregon University football players were named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VIII team. Seniors Kodiak Malmstrom and Leo Stoddard and sophomore Cory Sanborn made the team and will be among those representing West Coast small colleges on the All-American ballot. Malmstrom and Sanborn are defensive linemen, and Stoddard is a wide receiver. Sanborn has a 3.42 grade-point average in education, Malmstrom a 3.29 mark in health promotion and Stoddard a 3.27 mark in business. General Two Southern Oregon University athletics department employees have earned prestigious service awards. Football defensive coordinator Roger VanDeZande is an American Football Coaches Association assistant coach of the year, while longtime department secretary Rhonda Bergh earned the NAIA Region I meritorious service award. VanDeZande, a fifth-year aide, headed the Raider defense, which led Northwest small colleges and ranked in the top eight in the NAIA for total defense (254.5 per game). SOU limited opponents to 14.5 points, 94.6 rushing yards and 44-percent pass efficiency per contest. It's the second time VanDeZande, also the Raiders' recruiting coordinator, has won the award. Bergh was honored for her 21 years of service to SOU athletics, which is the longest tenure of any current full-time department employee. Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the department, she also assists Raider coaches in the recruitment process.
