The cougars were believed to be a young mother and two year-old cubs and were killed Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the Hanscom ranch along Anderson Creek Road, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. The cougars apparently killed the Hanscoms’ ewe Friday night and dragged it about 50 yards to a fence before abandoning it, according to ODFW biologist Merv Wolfer. Anticipating that the cougar would return, Don Hanscom, a family member from Phoenix, then stayed in the area Saturday night. After dark, he saw three cougars near the dead sheep, and shot one — a 33-pound female, Wolfer said. The remaining two cougars returned the next night, and Hanscom shot a 45-pound male, Wolfer said. On Monday night, he then shot the last one — an 80-pound female — near the dead ewe, Wolfer said. The animals were all killed legally under Oregon’s damage rules, Wolfer said. The animals were inspected by Wolfer, who later returned all three carcasses to the Hanscoms, Wolfer said.
