The fire has chewed through timber in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest roughly 12 miles west of Grants Pass since Saturday morning and is spreading north, this morning's report from the Josephine County Sheriff's Department said. East winds are forecast for the next two days, potentially pushing the flames westward. On Thursday, firefighters made good progress building fire lines along the western and northern flanks of the fire and that work will continue today, the sheriff's department update said. Crews began putting hoses and pumps along the lines dug by hand and with dozers, so water can be used to strengthen those lines and douse burning materials along the fire perimeter. As a back-up plan, crews are using heavy equipment to cut down and chip brush along roads, which can serve as fuel-free firebreaks. Clear skies today will enable firefighting helicopters and airplanes grounded by clouds Thursday to return to work. They will survey the fire from above and drop water, officials said. The change in the weather will bring hot, dry conditions back to the area, testing crews and the lines they have built,  the fire update said. Level 1 evacuation advisories warning residents to be ready to leave have been removed for all of Riverbanks and Limpy Creek roads. That type of advisory remains in effect for residents in the Pickett Creek, Shan Creek, Taylor Creek and Galice Creek areas.
