Wehinger, 48, is being cared for at his Lake Creek home and his condition is grave, said local businessman and friend Mike Burrill Sr. on Wednesday. "He’s not doing well at all," Burrill said. "This is very, very serious." Additional details regarding Wehinger’s medical condition were not available Wednesday. A call to Wehinger’s residence was not returned. In September, Wehinger opened the $2 million International Wildlife Recovery Center. The private, nonprofit center includes a receiving and inspection facility at the Medford airport. It also has a decontamination and rehabilitation facility on Little Butte Creek east of Medford. The project was 10 years in the making. Wehinger was the prime mover behind the relocation of the U.S. Forensics Lab to Ashland, and creation of the now-defunct Pacific Northwest Museum of Natural History in Ashland. He was the president of ORE-CAL Trade Corp., the company under contract with Jackson County to develop a Foreign Trade Zone in the area. He was named an honorary consul to Korea in 1996 because of his work to further develop the Foreign Trade Zone. According to Burrill, the list of Wehinger’s accomplishments in the community, "goes on and on." "He’s a visionary. He has the ability to look into the future and see an idea before its time," Burrill added. "He’s touched a lot of lives in the community."
