Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Shooting leaves questions Victim taken to Portland hospital; officials doubt identity given by suspect By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune A 24-year-old man was in critical condition late Saturday after being shot earlier in the day at a southwest Medford home, police said. The identity of the victim, who is Hispanic, was not released Saturday by Oregon State Police investigators because his family had not been notified of the shooting. He was initially taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for treatment but later transported by ambulance to Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies, along with OSP troopers and Medford police officers, went to a home in the 800 block of Cherry Street at about 9:45 a.m., after an incomplete 9-1-1 call was made from the residence, police said. The victim was located at the home, suffering from a single gunshot wound. Hastings would not confirm an initial report that the victim was shot in the neck. Just before 4 p.m., police located a suspect in the shooting near the intersection of Columbus Avenue and West Jackson Street in Medford. The suspect, whose name was not known late Saturday, was armed when he was taken into custody, Hastings said. Advertisement Investigators "don’t feel (the suspect) is being truthful about who he is," Hastings said. "My feeling was that (his capture) was going to lead to an arrest." The suspect was described as a Hispanic male about 20 years old. Hastings said federal investigators may be called upon today to help local detectives determine the identity of the suspect. Several other people were questioned in connection with the incident. Hastings said four people were located at the home when police arrived Saturday morning. The house where the shooting occurred is located just outside the Medford city limits. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said that although the apparent crime happened in his department’s jurisdiction, OSP is leading the investigative effort because sheriff’s detectives have their hands full with investigations into two recent homicides. A sheriff’s deputy remained at the home late Saturday, making sure the scene of the shooting was secured. Investigators strung yellow police tape around the entire property. A woman who lives next door to the home where the shooting occurred said she "never had any problems" with her neighbors, whom she did not know by name. The woman, who declined to be identified, said she believed tenants of the home were employed by a local reforestation company. The owner of the company did not return a phone call on Saturday. Hastings said he did not know whether the victim or the suspect resided at the home. Reach reporter Jack Moran at 776-4459, or e-mail [email protected] .
