Christopher Alan Page, 32, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Medford to three years in prison and ordered to pay more than $50,000 in restitution for using mail stolen out of rural Josephine County mailboxes to fraudulently obtain bank accounts and credit cards. Page had pleaded guilty in April to charges of aggravated identity theft, bank fraud and felon in possession of ammunition, court records show. Page's capture was prompted by a rural Josephine County resident who caught Page stealing mail in February 2015, according to a release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice. The resident confronted Page while taking video with a smartphone, the release said. Investigators seized multiple credit cards and checks in victims' names, large quantities of stolen mail, a credit card embossing machine, a credit card reader, boxes of ammunition and a list Page had made containing victims' personal and identifying information, the release said. There were more than 100 victims in the case, a court document filed by prosecutors states. Court documents show that Page had attempted 54 transactions using a Square reader totaling $279,429, and about $190,000 was attempted on one victim's account. Most of the transactions were flagged as fraudulent, but nearly $45,000 worth of transactions went through. Page also used fraudulently obtained cards to purchase more than $4,000 in electronics at Best Buy in Medford, and more than $200 at Walgreens in Grants Pass. Page was ordered to repay $50,785, which included losses and card processing fees, court documents state. Page has prior felony convictions in Jackson County for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and attempting to elude police in 2013, after a series of truck thefts ended in a high speed chase in Medford. He also had faced charges for his involvement in a mail theft ring targeting rural Ashland residents in 2013, but those charges were dropped as part of the vehicle theft plea agreement.
