Mail Tribune 100, Oct. 14, 1922 continued By Alissa Corman Oct 15, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Oct. 14, 1922 continued 500 WOMEN PARTAKE OF MANN’S BIRTHDAY CAKE The twelfth annual birthday party of Mann’s Department store was held Friday afternoon, and when the birthday cake was cut, there were over 500 women present, representing every district of Jackson County, there being a particularly large attendance from the country districts. The cut containing the $5 bill was the lucky fortune of Mrs. Loomis, and numerous others found stick pins, etc., in their portions. The Mann’s Department store was twelve years old yesterday, and its growth has been steady, the birthday cake cutting being an annual feature. LOCAL AND PERSONAL A cold fog this morning whose effects lasted until well into the forenoon made this the first real chilly day of the season — at least it felt that way, although the minimum temperature was only 39 degrees. Fair weather is the prediction for Sunday. ----- The public market of this morning was a very big one with every foot of selling space taken by the many vendors of all seasonable stuff. The patronage was also heavy. There was plenty of dressed chicken and it was the first time for months that any chickens were left over by 10:30 a.m. Veal and goat meat were also sold. There was an exceptionally heavy offering of grapes. ----- Today is National Candy Day and all over the United States dealers are making special displays to tempt the public to “say it with candy.” H. E. Marsh of this city is featuring an attractive display of a popular new chocolate. ------ Several parties of Grants Pass young people, who attended the football game this afternoon plan to remain for the fair ground pavilion dancing party tonight. ----- The novel decorations which were a feature of the Harvest ball given by the American Legion last Wednesday night will be left up for tonight’s pavilion dancing party, thus affording an opportunity for those who were not present at the Harvest ball to see these effective decorations. ----- Due to the clearing of the weather and the Rogue River valley sunshine the attendance at the local auto camp jumped from 6 cars and 19 people on Thursday to 23 cars and 69 people yesterday. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
