The woman escaped from the car and ran to a neighbor for help. Jarrod Garwood, 33, was convicted Tuesday of second-degree kidnapping, fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest and harassment, according to Jackson County District Attorney Lacie Nelson. He also will pay restitution and spend three years on probation, she said. Garwood has been in jail since his Nov. 17 arrest, jail records show. "In total, he will have been in for (about) a year by the time he gets out," Nelson said. The sentence was handed down after a two-day jury trial this week. The kidnapping and assault happened around 2 a.m. Nov. 4 in Rogue River. Nelson said Garwood recently had gotten out of jail and went to a house where he'd heard his 21-year-old former girlfriend was staying with another man. Prosecutors say Garwood went inside and found the woman hiding in a closet, unclothed. He dragged her outside, strangled her and put her in a car. The woman jumped from the car after traveling two blocks and ran into an alley. Garwood ran after her, but was chased away by a neighbor, Nelson said. "It was a very intense incident and very traumatic," Nelson said. Garwood was arrested Nov. 17. A Rogue River police officer spotted him in downtown around 2:30 that morning. Garwood ran and the officer chased him. The two fought on the railroad tracks behind the Chevron station at 95 Pine St., the Grants Pass Daily Courier reported at the time. Officers from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Oregon State Police arrived and helped subdue Garwood with a stun gun. The Jackson County District Attorney's Office said two other cases against Garwood remain open. In one, he is suspected of stealing mail from 10 Rogue River area residents Oct. 27.  In the second, he faces first- and second-degree burglary charges from a break-in July 15, also in the Rogue River area. A pretrial conference on the suspected burglary case has been set for March 23, while a trial for the alleged mail theft is set to start March 26, Nelson said.
