COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP Beavers wrap up road trip with win Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 22, 2015 at 6:07 PM Posted Feb. 22, 2015 at 6:07 PM » Social News SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Oregon State baseball team wrapped up an eight-game road trip Sunday by defeating Kansas, 15-5, at Surprise Stadium. Oregon State utilized a seven-run first inning against the Jayhawks en route to the win, which sent the Beavers to a 5-3 mark after the first eight games of the 2015 season. KJ Harrison hit a fifth-inning grand slam to highlight the offensive day for the Beavers, who finished with 13 hits overall. Harrison ended the day with five runs driven in, and pushed his hit streak to eight games with two hits, including a double. The freshman leads the Beavers with 15 hits, 13 runs batted in and four home runs. Jeff Hendrix added a solo home run in the seventh, his second of the year, to give the Beavers a 15-5 lead. The home run capped off Hendrix’s day, which saw him extend his hit streak to six games with a 3-for-5 effort, driving in two runs. Caleb Hamilton and Scotland Church each tallied two hits, while Joe Gillette and Christian Donahue joined Church with two RBIs. Kansas scored two runs in the top half of the first but the Beavers jumped on Jayhawks’ starter Sean Rackoski in the bottom half of the inning. OSU sent 11 to the plate during the inning, scoring seven runs on six hits and two walks. Church and Donahue each drove in two runs apiece, with Harrison, Hendrix and Gabe Clark all accounting for one apiece. The Jayhawks got a run back in the second but the Beavers tacked on two in the third on the strength of a Gillette sacrifice fly and throwing error by Kansas (2-5). Neither starter lasted more than two innings. Jake Thompson worked two full innings, allowing three runs and four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. His counterpart, Rackoski, was relieved after 2/3 of an inning. He allowed five hits and seven runs with two walks and a strikeout. Thompson did not figure in the decision. Rackoski, meanwhile, took the loss to drop to 0-1 on the year. The win went to Austin Woodward, who came on in the third inning and worked 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and a run in his second outing of the season. He improved to 1-0. Drew Rasmussen worked 3 2/3 innings after Woodward, holding Kansas to three hits and a run while striking out seven. Ryan Mets closed the game out of the Beavers. OREGON 6, NEW MEXICO STATE 3 : At Eugene, Jack Karraker threw seven innings of one run ball and the Ducks used a four-run second inning to complete the four-game sweep. New Mexico State (0-7) went up 1-0 in the second inning, but the Ducks (7-1) responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The Aggies couldn’t get much going from that point on, scattering four hits before picking up two runs on two hits in the ninth. The Ducks added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Karraker (1-0) blew through the Aggies lineup, allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings while walking none and striking out eight, a career high. The Ducks batted around in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Nick Catalano got the Ducks on the board with a RBI double to right-center field to score Mark Karaviotis. Austin Grebeck picked up a RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Mitchell Tolman drove in a run with a single to right field and Shaun Chase drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Matt Eureste.
