Letters to the editor Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 20, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 20, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News Officer came to rescue I wish to commend Medford Police Officer Nichols for the help he gave me when my World War II Jeep broke down and needed a tow on Main Street Monday, Nov. 17. As a WWII vet myself , I am well aware that after a certain number of years things begin to break down, so it was with much relief that I found Officer Nichols by my side offering assistance. He called a tow truck and waited with me until the truck came. Such concern for the relatively minor concerns of ordinary citizens is much appreciated by us older folk. I also owe many thanks to the two young good Samaritans, a man and a woman, who pushed my Jeep across the street and over to the side of the road where Officer Nichols found me. It is reassuring to know that so many nice people live here in our lovely city. Thank you all! William King , Medford   Sidetrack the fast track The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive, 29-chapter pact designed to set rules governing approximately 40 percent of the global economy. Leaks have revealed that the TPP threatens to outlaw "Buy American" requirements for local and state governments, increase medicine costs, offshore good-paying jobs and dismantle needed environmental and consumer protections, such as local anti-gmo regulations, in our state and beyond. See www.citizenstrade.org for details. A pact this far-reaching should be considered out in the open. Instead, after years of negotiations, Obama still refuses to let the American public see what they've been proposing for the TPP in our names, but nonetheless granting hundreds of corporate lobbyists access to draft texts. Unfortunately, mainstream Republicans have declared that passage of the TPP is one of their top legislative priorities for the new Congress beginning in January. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden threatens to introduce legislation to approve Nixon-era "fast track" rules allowing the TPP to circumvent ordinary congressional review, amendment and debate procedures. Fast track rightfully expired in 2007. Please contact Oregon's congressional delegation, Democrat and Republican, and urge them to oppose fast track for the TPP now and into the future. The website www.stopfasttrack.com makes this process swift and simple. Ivend Holen , Medford   Reasons for impeachment I have never seen such poor losers as Obama and his supporters. Leonard Pitts, Jr. says, "Go ahead and impeach Obama, I dare you." Really, Leonard? Why does the Mail Tribune put this malcontent in print anyway? Because Al Sharpton isn't available? There are all kinds of reasons to impeach Obama. How about the IRS or Fast and Furious scandals? How about  Obama supporting Muslim radicals in Libya and Syria — how did that turn out? How about the civilians being killed in Pakistan and Afghanistan by Obama's drone attacks? Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, has even gone so far as to push the "restart" button on the Cold War with Russia, 25 years later. Obama doesn't even care about the election results. He's going to give millions of illegal immigrants amnesty because he thinks the voters are stupid anyway. Do you want real immigration reform? Impeach Obama now! — Joe Thomas, Brookings   Name change unnecessary We just voted to raise our property taxes so that the library could remain open and provide more services. Is changing the name of the library providing more service? The survey did not bother to explain to the public how much this name change is going to cost. Very few people would vote to change the name if they knew the cost.  Is this responsible use of public funds? I do not think so. Please let Oregon show the country how responsible government may be, do not waste money on a name change.
