Junior All-American David O’Brien set a program record with his 17th consecutive bout win and claimed his third regional championship by defeating Embry-Riddle’s Joffre Lander, 3-1, in the 184-pound final. Freshman Joey Jannsen topped senior teammate Theo White for 141-pound gold, while junior Jimmy Grochowsky recorded a 13-4 major decision against Embry-Riddle’s Matt Howard for the 165-pound title. Sophomore Carl Green (125) and junior Josh Fitzgerald (174) each placed second. As a team, SOU scored 79.5 team points, 4.5 shy of runner-up and eighth-ranked host Menlo College. Fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle won its first-ever regional championship by amassing 95.5 team points. Advertisement "We didn’t overcome expectations," said SOU coach Mike Ritchey. "That’s pretty much where we were expected to finish. "We had chances. A few breaks here and there and it could have gone differently." Green, Jannsen, White and Fitzgerald placed high enough to qualify for next month’s NAIA Championships. Women’s Basketball OREGON TECH 73, SOU 54 — At Ashland, the Oregon Institute of Technology women’s basketball team clinched its first Cascade Conference championship and NAIA tournament berth by defeating Southern Oregon at McNeal Pavilion. The Owls (21-7, 16-2) stormed to a 39-15 halftime edge after limiting the Raiders (4-25, 3-15) to a miserable 4-for-26 field goal clip (15 percent) and outrebounding them 34-14. SOU, which trailed 61-33 with eight minutes to go, cut the margin with late 3-pointers by Jenny Terrien, Paula Pritchard and Anna Hidle. All-American Nikki McElligott led OIT with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while guard Samantha Gilbert scored 16. The Raiders received an 11-point, seven-board effort by sophomore center Sara Beyer, and sophomore forward Andi Peterson had eight boards but was held to only four points. Tech shot 40-percent for the game (26 of 65), and SOU was 15-for-58 (26 percent). The Owls finished with a 53-37 rebounding edge.
