Medford police said a man reported the theft at 8 a.m. at the Springhill Suites parking lot, 1389 Center Drive. Lt. Mike Budreau said the man, an official from Hitachi Aloka Medical America Inc., had traveled from Connecticut with a portable ultrasound and two probes for urology procedures to be used at Providence Medford Medical Center. The gear was in a large Pelican case and was left inside the rented Jeep overnight. At about 8 a.m. Wednesday, the man walked out of the hotel to find the Jeep top slashed and the equipment missing. According to a report, the ultrasound machine, which looks like a laptop, is valued at $86,600, while the penile and prostate probes are valued at $20,000 each. The Pelican case was valued at $200, making for a total $126,800 price tag on the stolen gear. "Not only is the equipment gone, but a perhaps critical medical procedure was not done because of this," Budreau said. Investigators said the thief likely broke into the car because of the Pelican case, curious about what was inside it. "It kind of goes to the same premises we've been saying for awhile: Simply don't leave valuables inside of a vehicle," Budreau said. "If somebody wants to get in, they will. "If (thieves) see something that's worth taking a look at, they'll force entry." A forensic technician has processed the vehicle for evidence, but it's not known when that will yield any new information about the case. Surveillance footage from area cameras has not provided any leads, police said. "Who knows what the individual is going to do with this equipment. It really has no street value," Budreau said. "Our worry is that he'll simply discard it and destroy it." Anyone with information is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
