The blaze is now considered 60 percent contained, according to Oregon Department of Forestry officials. Crews will continue mop up, focusing on the remaining smoldering stumps and other vegetation torched by the flames over the past week. "We’re pretty darn happy that we’re at this point now," said ODF spokesman Brian Ballou. "It’s been a rough week, a lot of question marks with some weather and some pretty rough country, but that’s not an abnormal problem." Some crews, engines and aircraft that have contributed to the effort will be released today and move on to other fires across Oregon. Ballou said their most likely destination is the High Pass Fire, which has been burning west of Junction City in the Coast Range since Wednesday. The Cleveland Ridge fire ignited Monday afternoon on private and Bureau of Land Management forestlands about 5 miles north of Shady Cove. At its peak, the blaze cloaked the north end of the Rogue Valley in smoke and crept close enough to structures that ODF crews issued Level 2 (Get Set) evacuation notices for area residents. A Level 1 Evacuation advisory remains in place for residents along Taylor and West Fork Trail Creek roads, and along Highway 227 from about the 6400 block to the junction with West Fork Trail Creek Road. However, the strike team originally assigned to protect 40 threatened homes in that area has disassembled. "People can pretty much resume their normal lives," Ballou said. The closure of TouVelle State Park, north of Medford on the Rogue River, will stay in place through the weekend as fire crews continue to use it as a fire camp.
