Many of these World War II Veterans (in their late 80s and early 90s) are facing serious health issues. But they are doing so with the same resolve, grit and good humor as they did fighting a war over 70 years ago. Some of their remembrances in the service have been transcribed and compiled into a book. Copies are at the Josephine and Jackson County historical societies, as well as the National Archives. If you don’t have the privilege of knowing these gentlemen, at least you can get a glimpse of their sacrifices by reading their oral histories. Through their efforts, they gave successive generations a better, free America. The following were members: Leslie Allen, G.L. Hamblin (US Naval Armed Guard), Francis Stoup, and John Webber from Grants Pass. Ernie Balogh and Fred Kuttig from Central Point. John Cullett from Azalea. Ernie Krauss from Harbor. Roy Nilsson from Temecula, Calif. Dave Sergent from Jacksonville. Bob Shanahan from Weed, Calif. Bill Smallback from Medford. Thank you for your service, gentlemen. We are indebted to you. Sandi Cassanelli Merlin Loyalty to whom? We know that fossil fuel corporations, like other big industries, have been purchasing influence in Congress for years. This legalized bribery has now corrupted our government beyond recognition. According to the International Monetary Fund, the fossil fuel industry receives $37.5 billion annually in U.S. taxpayer subsidies. In return for supporting those subsidies many of “our” legislators receive contributions, lobbying goodies and revolving door rewards from fossil fuel. But recently, House Republicans took it to a treasonous level: They voted against a Department of Defense funding request to combat climate change effects and develop a needed national security plan. Our military knows that climate change crises already exist, and that they will get worse. Yet despite knowing it would save taxpayer money, Republican legislators voted against both being prepared and keeping us safe. Those voting against our safety and our future aren’t blind, deaf, and dumb; they see the oceans rising, the coral dying, the droughts, the fires and the floods. But they have sold their souls and our children’s lives for their job security. Our own Southern Oregon representative received $100,000 from the fossil fuel industry in the past year. Lee Lull Talent Voting for Trump My wife and I are voting for Trump for president because we feel we as a country are headed down a very slippery slope. Trump has a lot of issues, no one will deny that, but we believe he does have America's best interests at heart. He is beholden to no one, he cannot be bought, he is not afraid of offending anyone and he is not one of the good old boys. That is why the establishment, including the GOP, dislikes him so much. He will not play by their rules. One of the primary reasons we will vote for him is because the next president will have a good deal of power in selecting the next judges to sit on the Supreme Court. Hillary and her liberal agenda will no doubt put in people that will be skewed to the left with their warped ideology. The ratio could be as much as 7-2, which would mean that America would probably never see another conservative victory of the Supreme Court for the rest of our lives. Another reason we would vote for Trump is that we like his hat! It reads, Make America great Again!
