News briefs OSF presents sign-interpreted plays The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's first sign-interpreted event of the season is set for Tuesday through Thursday in Ashland. Students from Central Point and Jacksonville schools will join 25 students from the California School for the Deaf, of Fremont, Calif., for performances of "Othello," "The Good Person of Szechuan" and other events. Interpreters will interpret the plays in American Sign Language, signing in front of a section of seats reserved for deaf and hearing-impaired students. "Othello" will be presented at 1 p.m. Tuesday, "The Good Person of Szechuan" at 1 p.m. Thursday. Missy Keast, a deaf actor from Los Angeles, presents a workshop on the use of sign language in the theater at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Cherokee author to speak at SOU ASHLAND -- The Earth Day program at Southern Oregon University will feature a presentation, "The Last Rattlesnake Throw," by Ralph Salisbury. The program is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22 at the SOU Rogue River Room. Salisbury, a Cherokee, is an internationally acclaimed author of American Indian fiction and poetry and professor emeritus of English at the University of Oregon. He will read poems and segments of his fiction that speak to environmental issues. The program is sponsored by the SOU Native American Student Union. Signups for girls program underway A nonprofit, nature-based program for girls and young women has opened signups for its summer programs. SEEK the Heart of Nature aims to help girls ages 10-16 develop confidence and self-awareness through outdoor adventures. Some of the offerings from the Ashland-based SEEK (Self-Esteem, Exploration and Knowledge) include a four-day trip of rock-climbing and rafting, and an adventure camp at EarthTeach Forest Park that overlooks the mountains of Ashland. That trip is sponsored by Southern Oregon Drug Awareness. Students and staff will display projects, work samples and present information about the school's curriculum. The school will raffle a car, a Nissan Maxima, to raise money for library books and special programs. Tickets are $1 each, and are on sale at the Phoenix Elementary School office, 215 N.
