Tanaka notches MLB-best 12th win MINNEAPOLIS — Carlos Beltran gave the foundering Yankees a jolt with a three-run homer Thursday night, lifting Masahiro Tanaka to his major league-leading 12th win and helping New York end a season-worst five-game skid with a 7-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Zelous Wheeler homered in his big league debut after eight years in the minors. David Robertson notched his 19th save with a hitless ninth inning and the Yankees started an 11-game road trip with a sigh-of-relief performance that put their record back at the .500 mark. Phil Hughes (8-5) was rolling right along against his former team, leading 2-0 until Beltran's big hit cleared the tall wall above right field following consecutive singles to start the fifth. Wheeler went deep two batters later. Tanaka (12-3) allowed a season-high four runs. Wheeler had a single to help spark the three-run rally in the seventh, too, scoring on Brett Gardner's single after a one-out RBI double by Brendan Ryan chased Hughes. Derek Jeter also drove in a run with a groundout. The last time the Yankees had a losing record after the halfway point on the schedule was 2007, when they were 42-43 on July 7 but turned around to go 52-25 the rest of the way to snag the wild- card spot. Athletics 4, Blue Jays 1 At Oakland, Calif., Sonny Gray allowed four hits over seven innings to bounce back from his worst start of the season for Oakland. The Blue Jays scored their only run with the help of an odd replay challenge by manager John Gibbons, who wanted to have his own player called out. Stephen Vogt scored the winning run on a passed ball in the second inning and the A's made it hold up behind Gray and two relievers. Tigers 8, Rays 1 At Detroit, Max Scherzer allowed two hits in eight outstanding innings, and Detroit backed its star right-hander with three early home runs. Angels 5, Astros 2 At Anaheim, Calif., David Freese hit a two-run double, Matt Shoemaker pitched in and out of trouble for six innings, and Los Angeles won the opener of a four-game series. Orioles 5, Rangers 2 At Baltimore, Steve Pearce had a career-high four hits and drove in two runs, and Wei-Yin Chen shut down Texas again as Baltimore completed a four-game sweep. National League Cardinals 7, Giants 2 At San Francisco, Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer, Carlos Martinez earned his second win as a starter, and St. Louis beat reeling San Francisco. Martinez (2-3) also drove in a run for the Cardinals, who won their second straight after losing three in a row. Martinez allowed a run and five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out six. Madison Bumgarner (9-6) fell to 0-3 over his past four home starts after allowing five runs — four earned — and six hits over five innings. Bumgarner also drove in a run for the Giants, who have lost 17 of 22 and fell out of first place in the NL West. Dodgers 3, Rockies 2 At Denver, Zack Greinke pitched eight solid innings and Juan Uribe hit the go-ahead single in the ninth inning for Los Angeles. Greinke (11-4) got the win when the Dodgers rallied in the ninth. Matt Kemp worked a leadoff walk off LaTroy Hawkins (2-2), went to second on Scott Van Slyke's groundout and scored when Uribe singled under the glove of second baseman DJ LeMahieu. Diamondbacks 10, Pirates 2 At Pittsburgh, David Peralta had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in four runs to help Arizona avoid a series sweep. Arizona scored three runs in the sixth and seven in the ninth. Phillies 5, Marlins 4 At Miami, Ben Revere scored the go-ahead run when Miami second baseman Donovan Solano bobbled a grounder in the ninth, and Philadelphia rallied to snap a six-game losing streak.
