Veteran guile prevails at speedway The King reeled in The Kid at the Southern Oregon Speedway Monday night. Brent Kaeding, a 10-time California state sprint car champion, overtook 16-year-old Steve Tiner midway through the 30-lap feature race and went on to win $1,750 for his efforts. Kaeding chased Tiner over 15 laps before the pair came up on lapped traffic. The veteran found an opening and kept Tiner at bay the rest of the way. The race kicked off the Northern Sprint Tour, which will run six times in as many days throughout Oregon and Washington. "That kid did one heck of a job," said Kaeding of Tiner, who won the trophy dash earlier in the evening. "He was real smooth and real consistent." Series points leader Shawna Wilskie finished fourth in the feature. Dan Menne, a former Medford resident who now races out of Fort Jones, Calif., was running fourth in the feature before car problems forced him from the race. The final night of the first half of the season also included racing action in three regular Southern Oregon Speedway classes. Points were not awarded in any of the three classes. Patrick Lanigan celebrated his 20th birthday by winning the super trucks. Lanigan won his fourth feature of the season, posting a comfortable victory in the main event. In the dwarf cars, Jon DeBenedetti triumphed. Greg Staten held the lead for the first half of the race before heading to the pits. That left the door open for DeBenedetti. The defending class and West Coast dwarf car champion took the top spot from Curt Hunter after the restart and won for the fifth time this season. DeBenedetti, of Rogue River, held off Hunter after another restart, this time after 12 laps, to pick up the win in the 15-lap main event. In the mini stocks, points leader Tracy Bradley ran to his second feature win of the season. Jim Hill, who had eight feature wins to his credit in the first half of the season, was second. There are no races scheduled at the speedway this Saturday. Racing resumes July 29, with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing starting at 6.
