Chaney, a former North Medford High standout and current Southern Oregon University freshman, made history of her past title-less efforts at the tournament to claim her first open singles championship. Chaney outlasted Grants Pass’ Ruth Lopez, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) during a semifinal match and used the momentum to cruise to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ashland’s Kristin Maloney in the finals. "I think (the semis) helped me warm up a bit," said the 19-year-old Chaney, who’s participated in the Lithia Open Tournament for about three years. "I’ve been having back problems and it helped to get out and loosen up a little." Lopez offered a bit of resistance with a low, hard ball, but Maloney’s top-spin action on the ball played right into Chaney’s wheel house. Advertisement "(Lopez) was tough because her ball was hard to get a read on," said Chaney. "I like (Maloney’s) style a little better. It was right into my strike zone." In men’s open singles, North Medford High senior Tyler Wilson dropped a 7-5, 6-0 match to Salem’s John Devorss. Wilson, who claimed a Lithia Motors junior title in January, battled Devorss, a University of Oregon graduate, to a 5-all standoff in the opening set, but couldn’t hold on. "(Devorss) just played flat-out better than I did," said Wilson. "He’s got a little more experience than I do. "I’m not used to seeing a serve and volley game like he showed. He was constantly putting pressure on me and making me make plays." Devorss used that experience and strong net play to blank Wilson in the second set. Michael Prikyl of Ashland defeated Medford’s Larry Fields, 7-6(1), 7-5 in the men’s 3.5 singles finals, while Grants Pass’ Mathew Bell took out Carl Norgauer (Cave Junction), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) in the 4.0 singles title match. Tami Weidert claimed the women’s 3.5 singles championship with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Grants Pass’ Paula Bice and Medford’s Merilyn Tribble downed Ashland’s Megan Loeding, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to win the 4.0 singles title.
