Skiers qualify for state meet Ashland's girls ended South Medford's two-year Southern Oregon Ski League reign last weekend, while Lakeview won its second boys championship in three years. Junior Rachael Karlin led the Grizzlies with two firsts, two thirds and two fourths during the six-race series that began Jan. 16 and ended with races Thursday, Friday and Saturday on Mount Ashland. Lakeview's girls easily outdistanced North Medford for second place and a trip to the state championships March 4-5 at Mount Bachelor. Ashland, the 1998 SOSL boys winner, finished second. Sophomore Kara Ray of Crater was second in the girls competition with a pair of firsts and a third. Ray was 16th in combined standings in last year's state meet and was eighth in the giant slalom. Junior Katie Krauss of St. Mary's was third with two seconds and two thirds. Ashland senior Eric Harris was the top boys performer, winning three races and finishing second three times. Harris was fourth in the combined standings in last year's state meet. Lakeview senior Josh Paull was runner-up with three wins and two seconds. The top two individuals not on a state qualifying team were Phoenix senior Sean Rio and North Medford senior Luke Levesque. They advanced to state, Rio placing eighth in the SOSL and Levesque ninth.
