Mahon hurls Pirates past Cougs CAVE JUNCTION � The pitching of Jake Mahon coupled with multiple errors by Illinois Valley led to an 11-1 Phoenix victory in Skyline Conference baseball Monday. Mahon pitched all seven innings for the Pirates (7-3, 5-0 Skyline) and only gave up two hits and one walk while striking out six. He had a no-hitter intact through the fourth inning. "Mahon threw real well today," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "He got behind a couple of times but came back to get people out." Mahon was also 2-for-4 at the plate. The Cougars (3-5, 1-4 Skyline) did not help themselves defensively. In the fourth inning, they had three errors which led to four runs for the Pirates. The Cougars committed seven errors, including two in the fifth inning. Eric Kessler went 2-for-4 for the Pirates, including a double and a three-run triple. He had four RBIs. Kyle Kaufman went 3-for-5 for the Pirates with two runs. In the first game, Brad Bailey hit a bases-loaded, three-run double in the eighth inning to give the Hornets (5-4, 3-2 Skyline) the win. Nick Telle pitched eight innings for the Hornets with seven strikeouts and two walks. Danny Hunter struck out seven over eight innings for the Chieftains (3-4, 1-4 Skyline). In Game 2, Telle went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored a run. Hyde only allowed five hits while improving his record to 3-1. Tyler Mason went 3-for-3 and knocked in three runs and Troy Beard added two hits for the Mustangs. In the nightcap, Hidden Valley (7-1, 4-1 Skyline) used a 10-run first inning to run away for the five-inning win. Beard led the way with three hits and three RBI, while Trevor Schmidt and Calvin Schmidt each added two hits apiece. Glasscock picked up a complete-game win in the opener, then came on in relief to help the Chieftains to a nightcap win. Rogue River, 3-2 in conference play, pounded out seven hits and helped Glasscock outduel Henley�s Jessica Birt. Kristi Frederick led the Chieftains with two hits, while Jessie Miranda also had two for the Hornets (5-2, 3-2 Skyline). In Game 2, Rogue River pounced on Henley early. The Chieftains took advantage of two walks, an error and five hits to jump out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. Henley climbed back but couldn�t cash in on some late-inning opportunities. Katie Eck had three hits to lead the Hornets, while teammate Krystal Young added two.
