The defending district champion Grizzlies had three of its four scoring players break 80, including the day’s low round of 75 from senior Stephanie Johns. Ashland tallied a 338 team total to take a comfortable 15-stroke lead over second-place North Medford (353) in wet conditions at Grants Pass Golf Club. The tournament concludes today on the par-73 Grants Pass layout. "I was pretty impressed with our play," Ashland coach Stephanie Santos said. "We shot some great numbers." While Johns posted a 2-over-par score, the Grizzlies got the next-best round of the day from Elaina Graham with a 77. And twin sister Stephanie Graham came in with the fourth-best score (79). Advertisement Grants Pass’ Justine Hix shot 78. Johns, who was grouped with Hix and North Medford’s Kacie Kinney, carded an even-par 37 on the front nine. "(Johns) was pretty consistent as usual," said Santos. "Her all-around game makes her so awesome. This is her senior year, and she wants to end her career on top." North Medford put together its best score of the year and has a commanding 34-shot margin over third-place Grants Pass. "We put ourselves in a great position to get a spot at state," said North Medford coach Tim Sam. "But anything can happen in golf, so we have to come to play." Kinney registered North’s low score of 80 and was supported with sub-90 rounds by Snow Powers (86) and Christina Thompson (88). "It wasn’t one person really going low," said Sam. "It was five girls playing really solid golf." Kinney was right in the mix for the day’s best round, standing 1 over going into the 15th hole. But she stumbled to 6 over on the final four holes. "(Kinney) was right in the thick of things for the district championship," said Sam. "She either just got a little tired or the weather got to her." The Grizzlies also built their conference-leading margin to 62 shots better than closest competitor North Medford. Both rounds of the district tournament go toward the seven counting tournaments that comprise the SOC standings. The regular season conference champion gets the league’s No. 1 spot to state. If the regular season champion repeats as district champion, then the district runner-up receives the league’s No. 2 spot at state. The top seven individual finishers also garner berths to the state tournament May 16-17 at Trysting Tree golf course in Corvallis. District 6 Girls DISTRICT TOURNAMENT — Miranda Akerman shot 90 to help Phoenix to second place behind Henley after the tournament’s first day at the par-70 Stewart Meadows Golf Course. The district event concludes today at Shield Crest Golf Course in Klamath Falls. Natalie Rest of Hidden Valley posted the low round of the day (86), while North Valley’s Ariel Huff stands one shot behind. Henley tallied the low team total of 398, leading runner-up Phoenix by 21 strokes. Compher of Phoenix is one shot behind Henley’s Blaine Corkhill (78) for the individual lead after the first day of the district tournament at Grants Pass Golf Club. Play moves to Harbor Links Golf Course in Klamath Falls for today’s final round. The Pirates, with five of the top seven individuals, are attempting to knock off defending district champion Henley and win its first boys Skyline golf crown.
