Black Tornado splits tournament openers North Medford pounded out 18 hits in two games of its own softball tournament Monday, but needed a couple more in the second outing. The Black Tornado defeated South Albany, 5-0, in its tourney opener at Fagone Field but left 10 runners on base in a 1-0 loss to Sprague in Game 2. "We�d get girls on base with an opportunity to score," North Medford coach Sara Barry said, "but we didn�t come through." Haley Varley had two hits in three at-bats in both games. The senior first baseman capped a four-run first inning against South Albany with a two-run double. Jill Carrigan added three singles and scored a run for the Tornado (2-2), while Steph Coe struck out six and walked one in six innings for the win. Sprague scored its only run against North in the fourth inning when Molly Barnes singled up the middle with one out and rode home on Lorilyn Wilson�s double to the right-center field gap. Coe relieved Keri Sevano with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and got out of the jam unscathed. SOUTH MEDFORD DROPS TWO � At Fagone Field, Beaverton pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Panthers, 3-2, at the North Medford Invitational. Southridge of Beaverton defeated South Medford, 9-1, earlier in the day. A walk and two hits in the bottom of the sixth were South Medford�s undoing after the Panthers rallied for a 2-2 tie in the top of the inning. Kaylee Rickert plated South�s first run in the top of the inning, while Amanda Blair scored on an error in the top of the sixth. Against Southridge, Lindsey McHenry had two hits for the Panthers. Morton went the first four innings, striking out eight and walking two and Doyel finished things off with four strikeouts. Kathy Richard, Ashley Bellum, Amy Durbin and Amber Gallego each had two hits for the Cavers. Teammate Liz Doyel led the squad with three RBI.
